What is the difference between a Food Handler and a Food Safety Supervisor?

Food Handlers prepare, handle, or serve food as part of their day-to-day job. Food Safety Supervisors are legally required for every food business and need more comprehensive training.

A Food Handler is anyone who prepares, handles or serves food as part of their day-to-day job. Food Handlers need basic food safety training (Level 1) or equivalent.

A Food Safety Supervisor oversees food safety practices in a food business. Under Food Standard 3.2.2A, every food business in Australia must have at least one qualified Food Safety Supervisor on staff. Food Safety Supervisors require more comprehensive training, covering both Level 1 and Level 2 units of competency.

In short:

  • Food Handlers complete Level 1 training to safely prepare or serve food.

  • Food Safety Supervisors complete both Level 1 and Level 2 training and take responsibility for food safety compliance in their business.
